SmartData All-In-One

SmartTalk · A Hughes Education Initiative

Solve the problem first. License the product second.

SmartTalk starts from a simple idea: don't hand a district another tool and ask it to adapt. We listen first, design the workflow educators will actually use, then wrap the right technology around it.

The hardest question in education was never which technology to buy. It's how the educator actually solves the problem day to day. So that's where we start.

The SmartTalk Method

01

Listen First

We convene the people who own the problem: administrators, counselors, teachers, and help them name it and map the workflow they already trust.

02

Design the Workflow

Before a demo or a price, we design the target workflow the district will actually adopt. The workflow is the product. Technology serves it.

03

Wrap the Technology

Only then do we bring in the right platform, activate it with an AI companion, and carry it with consulting, built around the workflow rather than the other way around.

The Architecture

The three tables

SmartTalk isn't a single organization. It's three distinct roles that meet at one table: educators who govern the voice, technology partners who build under a covenant, and the sessions where the two sit down together.

SDN

SmartData Network

The educators, governing the voice

  • Explain the problems: the workflow pain that eats their week
  • Design the workflows they actually want, in their own words
  • Promote the members and partners who deliver

“Educators are the voice, not the gatekeeper.”

SDP

SmartData Partners

The technology companies, under a covenant

  • Build to the educator-defined spec, not a guess at one
  • Customize, or bring in a partner who fits the workflow better
  • Meet the standard the network defines to keep membership

“Solve first, sell second.”

SmartTalk

SmartTalk

The whiteboarding table where they meet

  • Facilitated working sessions, run across multiple states
  • Educators and partners in the same room, at the same table
  • Real problems framed into real design specs

“Users have a voice.”

Three bodies, one covenant.

SmartTalk is Hughes Education's convening practice: listen to the people who own the problem, design the workflow they'll actually adopt, then wrap the right technology around it.

There are no bad ideas in brainstorming, but there are bad workflows. If an educator can explain the problem clearly, the network can build or customize the answer. The loop runs, and then it runs again.

The SmartTalk Loop

1

Explain the problem

Educators bring the real workflow pain, the thing that eats their week, ranked by how many people feel it.

2

Design the workflow

Educators shape the workflow they actually want. The spec is theirs, not a vendor's guess at one.

3

SmartTalk session

The whiteboarding session turns the workflow into a real design spec, educators and partners working it together.

4

Partners solve first, sell second

A SmartData Partner builds to the spec. If one company doesn't fit, it partners up with one that does.

5

Back to educators

Educators coach and validate the build before it ships, and the members who deliver get promoted.

Finished solutions reach priority leaders first. Every validated build goes to the priority district leaders in the network first. They become the proof, and the reason the next educator wants a seat and the next partner wants to build to spec, and the loop turns again.

Wraparound as a Service

Layer 1
Core SaaS

The platform

A proven system a district already runs, or is ready to adopt, supplies the capability and the data. SmartData is one example: early-warning, discipline and instructional data the district already has.

Layer 2
AI Companion

The wraparound

A Hughes-built AI companion app sits on top and puts that data to work inside the workflow the district actually uses, rather than asking staff to go find it.

Layer 3
Consulting

The consulting

Human expertise designs the workflow and carries the change, so the technology lands the way it was built to.

Every district already runs a student information system, an IEP platform, a learning management system, and an assessment system, the four corners of daily operations. SmartTalk doesn't ask a district to replace any of them. It wraps around what's already there and makes it more agile and more supportive.

The Four Corners

SIS
Student information
IEP
Individualized plans
LMS
Learning management
Assessment
Testing and growth data
  • Provide open, reliable, standards-based data flows
  • Keep the data under the district's control
  • Communicate enhancements and improvements ahead of time
  • Cooperate with the wraparound rather than wall themselves off

The Standing Table

SmartTalk keeps a standing table where district leaders and partner vendors brainstorm, debate, and agree on the problems worth solving and how technology should address them. Members shape what gets built next, and they're the first to use it.

Co-design the workflows that fix real problems in your district
First access to new AI companion apps and partner platforms
A peer network of districts working through the same hard problems
A direct line to the team designing what gets built next

Two ways to listen in

Real educators talking through real problems, on camera and in your inbox. Each conversation becomes a workflow, and each workflow becomes a story.

The Podcast

A running conversation with district leaders about the problems they're actually trying to solve, and how technology should serve them.

The Newsletter

Insight between conversations: what we're hearing from districts, what we're designing, and what's working.

Tell us the problem and the workflow you wish worked. We'll listen first.
